A Godly Girl’s Guide to Prayer

Why do we pray? I have always questioned this. For a long time, I used prayer as a means for God to give me what I wanted, and in return, I’d give Him the credit. Yeah, my philosophy needed some work.

What is Prayer?

Prayer is communication with God. It’s not just for when we are in need, or in the valley. Prayer is for every season and experience. Prayer can be praise. Prayer can be a conversation. Prayer can be thankfulness. Prayer equips. Prayer is the gateway to learning how God speaks to you. Prayer changes you and makes you more like Christ.

My aunt helped me picture what consistent communication with God can look like. She said, “I talk to God the same way I’m talking to you right now.”

Prayer doesn’t have to look like a formal transaction. Prayer allows us to be vulnerable with the One who knows the depths of our hearts. Voicing what we feel and how much we need our Father to move in every area of our lives is a healing experience.

Apostle Paul said it best: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

I want to give you this simple guide and method that can help you elevate your prayer life. It’s known as the A.C.T.S. Prayer model:

Adoration

In prayer, admire and appreciate God for who He is. Aside from all He can do for us, Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and giving us salvation—God’s name is magnificent alone. He’s the Creator of the universe. Everything good flows from Him and He deserves to be praised for that! Allow His goodness to overcome you, because gratitude is a doorway into God’s presence.

“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.” (Psalm 29:2)

Confess

Lay down your sins, struggles, and feelings at the Lord’s feet. Repentance realigns us with God. Confession opens us up so He can comfort, heal, and bring you peace. If you don’t know what to say, simply ask, “Lord, search my heart and reveal myself to me.” Sometimes, simplicity is key!

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24)

Thanksgiving

Thankfulness is how we are mindful to take nothing for granted. Take a moment to thank God for the things not promised to everyone: our well-being, our means of survival, and the people we call family. Thank God for the answered prayers you’re already living in. Lastly, thank God in advance because what He promised will be provided!

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18)

Supplication

Make your requests known and declare God’s will over your desires! The Bible says to ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. Don’t be afraid to tell your Father your wants and needs! He is always listening, and He is our ultimate provider.

“You can ask for anything in My name, and I will do it so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.” (John 14:13)
