The Swimmer in the Next Lane: Trusting the Race God Has Given You

I was at swimming training the other day when the coach assigned me a 200-meter swim. The swimmer in the next lane only got 100 meters.

She looked surprised. In her mind, she probably wondered why I got the longer swim.

As we pushed off the wall, she took off fast. For a split second, I wanted to match her pace. Then I caught myself. Why am I trying to chase her?

I didn’t know how she slept the night before or how tired she was.

I wasn’t aware of yesterday’s training load, her strengths or weaknesses, or the coach’s goals for her workout.

The only things I knew were my lane, my distance, and my assignment.

So I stopped looking sideways. Instead, I focused on my stroke and settled into a pace I could sustain, one length at a time.

Then, something interesting happened. The more I focused on my own swim, the less her progress interested me.

Comparison Never Shows the Whole Story

That lesson extends beyond the pool.

In life, we compare ourselves all the time. Someone gets promoted. Someone else earns more money. A friend buys a house. Another launches a business, gets married, or reaches a milestone we’ve been praying for.

We see others’ outcomes and measure them against our own lives.

But we never see the whole story. We don’t see the sacrifices they made, the opportunities they had, the struggles they’re carrying, or the challenges they’re facing.

Instead, we compare our reality to a version of someone else’s life we’ve invented in our minds.

Some people have had to fight for every step forward. Others were fortunate enough to start with support, opportunities, and encouragement.

Neither story makes one person more valuable. It simply means they started differently and swim different races.

Your Race Is Different for a Reason

The truth is, not everyone is chasing the same finish line.

Some people fight to get ahead. Others are simply trying to make it through today.

Some have already achieved everything they once dreamed of. Now they’re learning how to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the life they’ve worked so hard to build.

We assume everyone wants what we want. They don’t. The Bible reminds us to “run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Not someone else’s race. Yours.

God knows exactly what He’s growing in you. He isn’t asking you to keep pace with everyone around you. He’s inviting you to trust Him with the path He’s marked out for you.

Keep Your Eyes on Christ

At the end of the day, apart from God, no one knows your heart better than the person looking back at you in the mirror.

When you’re lying awake at night, stripped of appearances and excuses, you know exactly how hard you’ve worked, where you’ve been honest with yourself, and where you haven’t.

That’s why comparison is such a waste of energy. It drains our attention from the very work God has called us to do.

So keep your eyes on Christ. Stay in your lane. Take your stroke. Trust your pace. Finish your race.

The goal was never beating the next lane’s swimmer. The goal has always been becoming the version God is shaping you to be.
